Disco Hair Takes SO Much Effort

I really envy those people dressing up as superheroes for the upcoming Com-Book-Con in Melbourne. They’re like the training wheels of cosplay, because most of the time you can just put on a full costume with a mask and that’s it. No hair work, no special makeup, and you can probably just buy a movie prop if your character has any accessories. Sure, not everyone has the physique to pull off a superhero, but people just do it anyway, plus a lot of suits basically have abs drawn on so whatever.

And here’s me, trying to decide out of eight of my favourite anime characters. ALL of them have hair that defies gravity, and physics, and logic. Exactly where am I going to find a hairdressing salon here in South Melbourne that has the tools necessary for this stuff? I could just ask, but if you saw a picture of any of these characters you’d understand my problem. There’s Selenia from Pretty Car Dealer Sailor Hoon, who has these massive twin ponytails that look great trailing out the window during one of her drag races, but just aren’t practical for real life. And don’t even get me STARTED on Boogie from Boogie-Bro, the classic show about the young boy possessed by the spirit of an ancient 70s disco king who fights evil with the power of a DDR/card game hybrid. None of that was really relevant, aside from the fact that Boogie’s hair is this massive, colourful afro. It’s possibly the most distinctive hair I can think of.

I can’t put that on any of my hairdressers. Melbourne is considered a very fashion forward places, but I’m not sure my crazy hair style would fit in. They’re not used to dealing with this kind of theatricality, and I don’t really feel like my hair is cut out for anything massive anyway. It’s honestly pretty thick and stubborn. So I suppose my only choice is to…buy a wig. Oh, the horror.

I’ve made every aspect of my costume every other year, but now I realise I was gravitating towards the easy hairstyles. This one really came back to bite me.
