Fairies and Mechanics

“This is the coolest car I’ve seen yet!” Pom shrieked, jumping up and down on the fan belt. Oil covered her face, wings and feet but she didn’t care. Ever since she had begun to sneak into professional mechanic workshops across the suburb, she had begun to love the smell.

“Can you please be quieter?” Beatrice hushed, glancing over her shoulder as though a human would overhear. A person could never fit inside a car engine, let alone hover up to the top of the coolant lid she was standing on, but Pom still took her friend’s paranoia seriously.

“I’m sorry, I just can’t believe I found a European car mechanic near me.” Her smile was brighter than a check engine light. She could not believe her luck.

Every auto workshop they had travelled to so far had the same run-of-the-mill vehicles. This one, with its glistening engine components, was a treasure trove. She had known it as soon as they slipped past the car air conditioning vents and found the air filter completely pristine.

“This has to be the coolest car that has ever needed a car air conditioning service near Frankston,” she cried out with glee.

“An oddly specific title, and not one that is hard to earn I imagine,” Beatrice muttered under her breath. Still, she found it hard not to smile at Pom’s excitement. It was odd for a fairy to have any interest in humans. A fairy having interest in how cars worked? That was practically unheard of.

The way that her friend’s eyes sparkled with excitement was something that Beatrice was sure couldn’t be a bad thing. This much joy could never be bad. It was the one reason that, whilst constantly advising her to not go near the humans or their things, she never really stopped her friend from exploring.

Beatrice wished she had something that made her so happy. At least she had Pom, who maybe did just that.
